Hackney, in inner east London, was formed as a borough in 1965 from the former metropolitan boroughs of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington. It stretches from Shoreditch on the edge of the City, through Dalston and Hackney Central, to Stoke Newington, Clapton and the green spaces of Hackney Marshes and Victoria Park's northern edge. The three former boroughs each still have their own distinct character.
The borough's oldest building is the Grade I listed St Augustine's Tower, all that remains of Hackney's early sixteenth-century parish church, while the Hackney Empire on Mare Street opened in 1901 to a design by Frank Matcham. Hackney's housing mixes Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian terraces, large council estates, warehouse conversions and new-build flats — each with quite different heating needs, from compact combis to larger system boilers.
Hackney's homes are a real mix: Georgian and Victorian terraces in De Beauvoir, Stoke Newington and South Hackney, large council estates, warehouse conversions in Shoreditch and new-build flats around Hackney Wick. Converted flats usually suit a compact combi, while larger houses may need a system boiler and cylinder. We check flue options and lease conditions at survey, and often recommend a MagnaCleanse for older pipework before a new boiler goes in.
